If you are using Lithium or Li-ion batteries as they are called in your laptops, you can do some things to prolong their life and save yourself some headaches and save money. You do not want to have to buy a replacement battery if you can help it, these are not cheap. Do what you can to take care of them and you will get better performance and longer life.

Like other types of batteries you should avoid exposing them to high heat. Keep your batteries or laptop in a cool location, which means do not leave them in a hot car. The temperatures inside a car that is closed and sitting in the sun can get pretty hot.

And do not freeze the battery, this can be just as destructive. If you think you may want to buy a spare Li-ion battery to have on hand as a back up, don't bother. They have a shelf life so if you do not use it before it ends you have wasted your money. Also check the manufacturing date on a battery you may be buying to be sure the expiration is not approaching.

Li-ion batteries are different from NiCad batteries when it comes to charging and discharging them. You should try to keep your Li-ion's charged as often as possible. Do not let them deep discharge as this will shorten their life. If you plug your laptop in for power most of the time, take your battery out and store it in a cool location.
