When thinking about backing up your computer regularly, the two main choices are to backup online, or backup to an external hard drive. Each solution has pros and cons that when combined, give you the answer you need.

The first thing you need to look at is the cost of setting up and running the backup system. If you're going to backup to an external hard drive, you'll need to purchase the drive and some software to manage the backups. However, if you decide to backup online, you'll only pay out about to get started, and every month to keep the service going. If you purchase multiple months upfront, you can save on your online backup purchase.

Your first backup is called a full backup, as everything is copied from your computer to the backup location. With an external hard drive, this process can take a few hours. However, with online backup, this process can take days or weeks. Make sure you backup your most important files first, then add the other files on your system to the list of files to backup.
After the full backup is done, the system will then only backup files which have changed (called incremental backups). This only lasts a few hours, as there are fewer files to send to the backup server.
Where online backup truly shines over an external hard drive is the safety and security it provides. The online backup of your data is safe from fire, theft, flood, or other physical damage. On the other hand, if your backing up your data to an external hard drive and your house catches on fire, both your computer (containing the original version of your file) and your external drive (containing the backup) will both be destroyed.
Many online backup providers also have additional features which you may find useful, including the ability to share files with colleagues, access your files remotely (including from an iPhone or other smart phone), or even the ability to synchronize files between multiple computers.
So when planning your computer's backup system, make sure you weigh the pros and cons of online backup versus an external hard drive before making your decision.

Android 3.0 Honeycomb
